Day Date

So, we've been trying to get better about going out on dates, and after an afternoon with the IJM HR team in Purcellville, VA and a generous last-minute baby-sitting offer from wonderful Naomi, we planned a day date to this fascinating little town in Loudoun County, VA.  I highly recommend the day date.  It's so fun to be out and about not worrying about a scheduled nap time or lunch time, with a whole day just to wander around and explore.

Purcellville is an interesting little town with lots of antique and thrift stores, a couple bike shops, an interesting distillery, some good restaurants, and not much else.  But it's great for an afternoon of poking around small-town Virginia, and it's set in some beautiful wine country.  Couple that with the end of the fall colors and a gorgeous fall day, and we had so much adult fun!

We started by eating a delicious lunch at Magnolias at the Mill, a gorgeous restaurant in and old mill at the end of the W&OD bike trail.  It is a beautiful restaurant with super good food, and I had just been there a couple days before with the IJM HR team.

We explored the town of Purcellville for a little bit
Then we went to Catoctin Creek Distillery for a tour and a tasting.  It is a fascinating little distillery, and does it's very best to be organic, environmentally conscious and sustainable.  They re-use everything!

Their tasting room was really neat, and had ceiling tiles made out of the parts of the building that they replaced when they moved in a couple years ago.
After that, we drove a few short miles into wine country.  There are so many wineries around, and it's so beautiful!  We went back to Sunset Hills, another place I had been with the HR team, and didn't do the full tasting since I already had.  The inside is lovely, and they had live music.  It was also quite busy, so Mike just bought a glass and we wandered around the really lovely grounds for some quiet.

We then drove to another winery called 8 chains north.  It had such a different feel.  It had much smaller grounds then Sunset Hills, and was less pretentious and very down to earth.  However, Sunset Hills had a bunch of families with kids running around the grounds, but I didn't see one kid at 8 chains north.  8 chains north was also a little quieter, although still a decent number of people there.  It was fun to get to see two very different wineries.
What was super fun about their wine tastings was that you could pair them with a chocolate tasting, too.  And while the wine wasn't as good as Sunset Hills, in my opinion, the chocolate was a great touch!

Sunset on the way home - such a wonderful, low key day to be together and enjoy one another's company.
