I like the way you make me laugh...

"... I like the funny things you do..."   Remember that old jingle from the Sprite commercial?  Anyway...

While a nearly-three-year-old Jovie presents some sassy challenges at times, she also makes us laugh.  A lot.  Here are some of the funny things she has said/done lately.

We were looking through her Jesus Storybook Bible, and there was picture of Mary and Joseph on the way to Bethlehem.  Jovie has been a little obsessed with Mary lately, and will put her blanket on her head and say "Look- I'm Meery!"  Anyway.  In this picture, Mary was obviously pregnant, so Jovie pointed to her and asked, "What's that bump in Mary's belly?"  I didn't think through my answer very well, and just said "Mary is pregnant with Baby Jesus.  He's in her belly."  She stopped, looked up at me, and said "Mama, did Mary eat Jesus?!"

At Jennifer's wedding a couple weeks ago, she was struggling to understand the concept of getting married.  I was trying to explain that Jennifer was the bride, that she would wear a white dress and get married.  When Jennifer started walking down the aisle, Jovie said, "Look!  There's Mary!"  So, I tried to explain that Jennifer wasn't actually Mary, but that she was getting married.  Later, Mike had to take her to the back and out the door a bit during the ceremony.  When it was over, she came back in and came up to me and said "Mama, did you get married?"  I tried to explain that I got married to Daddy a long time ago, and the only people that got married today were Jennifer and Casey.  So she asked "Can I get married?"  And I told her someday when she was older, if she wanted to make that choice, she could.  So after the wedding, we were driving back, and from her carseat she piped up and asked again if I got married.  I explained that Daddy and I got married almost 11 years ago because we love each other and want to spend the rest of our lives together.  She said "Someday, when I'm bigger, I will get married.  Then I will join you."

A few weeks later, she saw a lady at Starbucks with a sari wrapped loosely over her hair.  She said "Look, Mama, there's Mary!"  When I said she should be quieter, she said "Should we go outside so we don't disturb everyone?"

One recent morning I got her out of her crib when she woke up and brought her into bed to snuggle with me a little.  She asked if I could go in her crib and I said I was too big.  So she said "Someday you will be little and you will go in my crib.  Then I will grow up and hold your hand and sing you a song. "

Sometimes the way she mimics me in the context she does is pretty funny.  One day, I was holding her and she put her hands on either side of my face and said "Look into my eyes, Mama."  Then she went on to say what she wanted to say, and said "Do you understand me?"  Clearly, I say these things to her, and it's very difficult to keep a straight face when she says them.

It's also fun to hear her try to figure out how to properly use words, and what different things are called.  When she has a lollipop, she often asks, "Mama, is this a sucker or a licker?"  The first time she asked, I burst out laughing.  It makes sense that she asks- I mean, she doesn't necessarily suck a lollipop - she licks it. One time she got a cake pop, and because she doesn't suck or lick a cake pop, she asked, "Is this a chewer?"
